Three Great Oils

Hi everyone,

Lately we’ve been getting some questions about oils, aromatherapy and pain relief, so decided to talk about three of the most common oils—lavender, tea tree and eucalyptus, often found in aromatherapy products, soaps, pain relieving remedies and cleaning products.

Lavender Oil has been known to be used for its calming and soothing properties, especially good forrelieving muscle and joint pain, sometimes headaches and as an aid for stress.  It was used in many forms in the Middle Ages and probably way before.  Cleopatra is even claimed to have used it in ancient Egypt, more than 2500 years ago.  Lavender was thought of as a cure-all, used for insomnia, aching backs, headaches, etc.   Lavender in its non-oil form is often used in cooking and culinary dishes.

Next up is Tea Tree Oil, considered a natural antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal oil as well as an antiseptic.  Alot of anti in there.  For well over 100 years, and a whole lot longer in places like Australia, tea tree oil has been used for rashes, chicken pox, shingles and the herpes virus, the one that produces cold sores.

Eucalyptus Oil rounds out the three.   It is distilled from a leaf of the Eucalyptus plant and used in pharma preparations to relieve symptoms of flu and colds.  It is often used for decongesting and treating bronchitis and other respiratory infections.  The oil is also anti-inflammatory when used topically as a liniment such as in Watkins White Liniment.

All in all, these three oils either individually or combined in products, can be effective remedies for relieving the symptoms of dry skin, psoriasis, eczema, rashes, bronchitis and dermatitis.

Watkins products have a number of items with these ingredients in them, from cleaners to hand soaps, bath salts, and liniments.  Be sure and check them out.

Have a great week and Women’s History Month!

While at Market Night

Recently, I and some of the Natures’ Heritage staff were at Market Night displaying Watkins products.  It was alot of fun as it always is.  It was amazing the number of people who came up and reminisced about the ”Watkins Man” they remembered from their youth.  Several thought Watkins had gone the way of many ”old” companies, and were extremely glad they were still around and represented by us now “21st Century Watkins people”.  They were intrigued about all the new products along with the old favorite standbys.  Many others said they only thought Watkins was available at their local fairs once a year.   We ran out of catalogs and sold almost all of the products we had brought along!

A favorite Watkins product that night seemed to be the Menthol Lavender Drops, first introduced by Watkins in 1934.  This product helps with clearing your head and lets you breathe easier.  In the “old” days it was known as the “Vest pocket doctor”.  100% natural!  People who suffer with asthma and allergies particularly like this product and Market Night proved that for sure.   All our supplies of Menthol Lavender Drops sold out immediately.

So, if you’re looking for a 100% natural product to help with allergy or asthma relief you might want to join the many others who have used this product since 1934!  Be sure and let us know if you found the product beneficial!

Have a great Natures’ Heritage Day!

Tantalizing Pumpkin Butter Meatloaf

Natures’ Heritage staff decided to try a twist on the old standard meatloaf by incorporating one of Watkins’ seasonal favorites–pumpkin butter.  It was delicious, giving the meat a slightly sweet  flavor and was a definite hit.  If you like a bit of a BBQ or smoky flavor in your meatloaf try some Watkins BBQ sauce with it as well.

Here’s our recipe–enjoy!

Pumpkin Butter Meatloaf

1 large onion, finely chopped

1 Tablespoon butter

2 1/2 Lbs. lean ground beef

1 1/2 Cups dry bread crumbs

2 Large eggs, beaten

1 Tablespoon Mustard

1 Cup finely chopped fresh parsley

1/2 Teaspoon salt

1/2 Teaspoon Watkins ground black pepper

1/8 Teaspoon ground allspice

3/4 Cup Watkins Pumpkin Butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.  Grease 10 x 14 inch baking pan, then in a frying pan saute the onion in the butter until soft.  Combine all the other ingredients in a bowl and add the onion.  Mix everything thoroughly together and form into a loaf in the baking pan.  Bake for 1 hour, then let cool for 20 minutes before serving.  Serves 8.

Have a great Natures’ Heritage Week!

What do Robins, Windows and Watkins have in common? Spring!

The robins are chirping outside this morning reminding me it’s Spring.  And with Springtime comes Spring Cleaning and wanting shiny windows to see all those robins better.  Watkins has several great natural, plant based cleaning products which are non-toxic, but I think the favorite for window cleaning has to be the Lavendar Window Cleaner.  With this product window cleaning has become a “refreshing” scent filled experience rather than a drawn out long, hard process.  Because the window cleaners are coconut based they won’t break down the bonds of plastic on window films and work great on tinted windows.

I should mention also that the Window Cleaners can be used on mirrors, glass tabletops, and other hard surfaces around your home or apartment and are available in an Aloe and Green tea formula.

Because Watkins Window cleaners are plant-based and non-toxic they are great to use around kids and pets.  No harsh chemicals or toxins to worry about.  The formula consists of purified water, natural lavender, rosemary oil and a plant-based surfactant.  They are specifically formulated for hypoallergenic conscious homes and cleaning around children.

After all that window cleaning you might want to treat yourself to one of Watkins newest products–Coconut Milk and Honey hand and body lotion–99% natural.  This rich formula provides deep, long-lasting moisture that feels great, andn leaves skin naturally smooth, soft and nourished.  The formula contains more than 10 natural oils and extracts to protect  even the most sensitive, chafed or chapped dry skin.

Then sit back and enjoy the robins and this great Spring weather!
