Hurricane Sandy

After seeing the devasting effects of Hurricane Sandy on the Eastern Seaborad last week two great American relief organizations come to mind to help with recovery efforts for our fellow Americans in need—the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army–

Additional information can be found at these websites–

And if you’re curious, as we were at Natures’ Heritage, as to which of these two great American relief organizations, The Red Cross or the Salvation Army started first, a little research shows that the Salvation Army started in 1852, followed by the Red Cross in 1881.

And if you’re curious as to when the Watkins company started, it was right after the Civil War in 1868…144 years ago…

Have a great Natures’ Heritage week out there!

Poets Ahoy! National Poetry Month

Well, all the April Fool’s jokes are over and done with, so now it’s time for National Poetry Month, a time to celebrate poets and their poems.  The National event was started in 1996 by the National Academy of Poets.

Celebrate National Poem In Your Pocket Day will be Thursday, April 14, 2011.   The idea of Poem In Your Pocket is simple: select a poem you like during National Poetry Month then carry it with you on April 14th to share with co-workers, family, and friends.

Haiku is my favorite form of poetry….3 lines–the first and third with 5 words. the second with 7, usually relating to something in nature.  That’s it.  Simplicity in form. Try writing one, you may find you like it.

Here’s a poem to get you started for National Poety Month from one of America’s most beloved poets, Dr. Seuss—

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

On that note this person has decided where to go–to investigate some Carl Sandburg and Robert Frost poems over a cup of Watkins Chai this morning—

Join me in reading or writing a poem a day this month.

RIP Elizabeth Taylor

I was thinking about Elizabeth Taylor over the last day or so since she passed away and all the great films she was along with the two Oscars she received.   Irregardless of her personal turmoils you have to agree they just don’t make ‘em like that any more.  Mickey Rooney summed up her legacy nicely remembering her as “a great lady, with us for over 65 years starting at age 9 as a child actor”.

Elizabeth Taylor had over 50 film credits, and was a business woman extraordinaire…many didn’t even what “White Diamonds” were until Liz Taylor put them on the map with her perfume campaign many years ago.

She knew how to promote and market her products very effectively and her signature items will be with us for a very long time I think.  Maybe not as long as Watkins’ 143 year run has been but a long time nevertheless.  Speaking of Watkins there are several new products coming out for your enjoyment this Spring.  Stay tuned for updates!

And think about watching “Butterfield 8″ or “National Velvet” over a cup of coffe, cappuchino or Watkins Chai Latte for a trip down memory lane–
