RMS Titanic

Hi everyone,

Watching all the specials last night and today on the 100th Anniversary of  Titanic’s maiden voyage and sinking was fascinating to say the least.   So much more is known today about the misfortunes of the ship, the world’s largest and most luxurious ocean liner of its time.   The people on board knew how to live well.  And enough could never be said for the engineers on board who lost their lives to save so many passengers.

The National Geographic Special WAS really special, along with Bob Ballard, the researcher who found the Titantic’s remains in 1985, and great new footage of people who were on board, and actual messages sent from the Marconi Wireless, the first non-voice radio transmitter of its kind.

Len Goodman of “Dancing with the Stars” fame also gave a wonderful overview of the ship and many of  its departments–from personnel, engineering, hospitality, libraries on board, engine carpartments to culinary (do you think  Watkins vanilla and cinnamon might have been on board?)

I know some people are commemorating the event with “Titanic” brunches and dinners–that sounds like an excellent thing to do–one place in Texas was even offering a 10 course “Titanic” meal for $12K!

If you get a chance take a few moments and make a cup of  Watkins Chai Latte and commemorate Titanic’s Centennial –maybe viewing some of the archival information on the ship and Ballard’s expedition…truly fascinating reading and watching!  I’m sure another generation of Titantic historians and enthisiasts are right around the corner!

Have a great Natures’ Heritage week out there and enjoy the nice spring weather!

While at Market Night

Recently, I and some of the Natures’ Heritage staff were at Market Night displaying Watkins products.  It was alot of fun as it always is.  It was amazing the number of people who came up and reminisced about the ”Watkins Man” they remembered from their youth.  Several thought Watkins had gone the way of many ”old” companies, and were extremely glad they were still around and represented by us now “21st Century Watkins people”.  They were intrigued about all the new products along with the old favorite standbys.  Many others said they only thought Watkins was available at their local fairs once a year.   We ran out of catalogs and sold almost all of the products we had brought along!

A favorite Watkins product that night seemed to be the Menthol Lavender Drops, first introduced by Watkins in 1934.  This product helps with clearing your head and lets you breathe easier.  In the “old” days it was known as the “Vest pocket doctor”.  100% natural!  People who suffer with asthma and allergies particularly like this product and Market Night proved that for sure.   All our supplies of Menthol Lavender Drops sold out immediately.

So, if you’re looking for a 100% natural product to help with allergy or asthma relief you might want to join the many others who have used this product since 1934!  Be sure and let us know if you found the product beneficial!

Have a great Natures’ Heritage Day!

Groundhog Day and the Super Bowl

Well, Punxsutawney Phil is back in his winter habitat after his proclamation of six more weeks of  Winter earlier this week and now we head for SuperBowl XLVI (Superbowl 46) Sunday.  With all the predictions going around on Phil Thursday and the Patriots and Giants for this weekend,  anything is indeed possible.

A good way to relax through the game is with the beverage of your choice and some appetizers with family and friends.  Here is an old time Natures’ Heritage favorite recipe for chips and dip–

Party Time Chips

1 Tbsp butter
1/4 Cup Watkins grapeseed oil or olive oil of your choice
4 cloves garlic
3 loaves pita bread

 Preheat oven to 300 Fahrenheit.

Melt butter in small skillet, then add grapeseed oil or olive oil and garlic and sauté over low heat for about 5 minutes.

Split pita loaves in half and separate the top & bottom halves. With inside of the pita side down, place pita slices in the butter/oil mix for a few seconds each, then placing them on a cookie sheet, oiled side up.

Bake about 8-10 minutes, then place under broiler until golden brown. Remove and cut each piece into 3 smaller pieces  and serve with one of the great JR Watkins easy to make dips.  Makes about 3 dozen appetizers.  Enjoy!

We’ll be back for Monday morning quarterbacking on the Super Bowl!

Tantalizing Pumpkin Butter Meatloaf

Natures’ Heritage staff decided to try a twist on the old standard meatloaf by incorporating one of Watkins’ seasonal favorites–pumpkin butter.  It was delicious, giving the meat a slightly sweet  flavor and was a definite hit.  If you like a bit of a BBQ or smoky flavor in your meatloaf try some Watkins BBQ sauce with it as well.

Here’s our recipe–enjoy!

Pumpkin Butter Meatloaf

1 large onion, finely chopped

1 Tablespoon butter

2 1/2 Lbs. lean ground beef

1 1/2 Cups dry bread crumbs

2 Large eggs, beaten

1 Tablespoon Mustard

1 Cup finely chopped fresh parsley

1/2 Teaspoon salt

1/2 Teaspoon Watkins ground black pepper

1/8 Teaspoon ground allspice

3/4 Cup Watkins Pumpkin Butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.  Grease 10 x 14 inch baking pan, then in a frying pan saute the onion in the butter until soft.  Combine all the other ingredients in a bowl and add the onion.  Mix everything thoroughly together and form into a loaf in the baking pan.  Bake for 1 hour, then let cool for 20 minutes before serving.  Serves 8.

Have a great Natures’ Heritage Week!

Off and Running

Well, the New Year 2012 is off and running.   Amazing we are already eleven days into in it.  While driving to a meeting this morning and seeing all the green in the fields I was struck by the mild winter we seem to be having everywhere.  Recently I read that the snow cover in the country is only 16% nationwide, but don’t tell Cordova, Alaska that as they just topped 200 inches of snow so far this winter and requested more snow shovels to handle the massive amount of snow!  I feel like sending a case of  Watkins warming balm to soothe all those aching muscles!

Watkins orders are coming in at a fast clip in the New year including Watkins’ new natural baby line which definitely deserves a look by new parents and grandparents, especially those that remember the Watkins name and their quality line of products.  Check it out at www.watkinsonline.com/martinez1

Have a great week, stay warm and take time to enjoy some remaining Watkins pumpkin butter or Chai latte…:)  I have a new pumpkin butter meatloaf recipe I’ll share in a couple days–stay tuned!

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!!

Hi everyone,

I really need to share this information–

Natures’ Heritage staff discovered a new use for JR Watkins Hand and Body Lotions—as shaving cream when dealing with super sensitive facial hair.    The guys swear by it for a really close shave and do they ever smell great as there are four different fragrances to try out–Lemon, Mango, Lavender and Aloe Vera!  And such smooth skin—amazing!

So, if this is a problem for you as well, or you have dry skin made drier by the rapidly approaching winter months, you might want to give these lotions a try.

Have a great Natures’ Heritage Day out there!
