I and our Natures’ Heritage staff spent last weekend at a festival supporting the reintroduction on an endangered plant species in our local mountains. It was a great experience with many people coming from all around the country to support this worthy cause. Many stopped by our Watkins table and relayed many, many stories of the “Watkins” man coming to visit their homes, ranches and farms in earlier times to us. It was very evident that the “Watkins” man/men had visited all over the country as well, from Maine to California, Pennsylvania to Arizona and all places in between, both urban and rural.
Upon seeing our Watkins banner, people immediately would smile, often say “Watkins”, and be seemingly transported back in time to some positive memories. Many shared stories with each other right in front of us and our exhibit area about ”their” Watkins man and how these salesmen always carried vanilla, cinnamon and pepper, petro-carbo “cow” salve and the wonderful array of Watkins products, along oftentimes with items for children like sparklers or candy pops, etc to share while mom and dad, aunts and uncles looked over the products.
Several of the people visiting the festival had children and grandchildren in tow and we witnessed a great inter-generational experience as they shared their stories. Upon hearing about the great properties of the Watkins heritage medicinals expressed by their parents and grandparents many of the younger ones wanted to know more about Watkins and if the Watkins products were still available while also inquiring about the many new natural products available to try out and share.
Many people visiting the festival thought Watkins had disappeared from the scene like so many other companies over the decades and were very pleasantly surprised to find Watkins products and independent Watkins associates still there, the company now approaching 144 years old. Catalogs flew off our table as did most of the Watkins products we had brought to the festival, and we completely ran out of samples. We took additional orders and we’ve been working the last 2 days on orders, replenishing products and catching up on new mailing list entries for our monthly newsletter.
It made us all very proud and happy to be associated with this great American company and its long standing heritage which now spans three centuries. Staff and I are still talking about this great experience and all those smiles on the peoples’ faces…:)
