Two Cents in 1914

While catching up on our e-mail upon returning from vacation, an article was forwarded to us about what .02 cents bought in 1914, when desserts and dishes created from JR Watkins Vanilla, Cinnamon, Pepper and other gourmet spices and extracts filled many of these articles.   Using a calculator for inflation, the .02 cents of 1914 equals .43 cents in 2011.  Enjoy!

Gone Fishing—

We’re out fishing this week.  Nothing better than relaxing with Fall fishing, after the busy-i-ness of the summer.  Great chance to interact and commune with natures’ heritage.  It is our name after all.

As for the fish we’ll be trying something a little different this time around–a new power bait complemented by Watkins vanilla.  Supposedly the smell of vanilla in the water really attracts freshwater panfish such as crappies, sunfish, and perch, and maybe even a finicky trout who can’t just leave it alone out of curiosity.  We’ll let you know how we did–and if the catch is good, we’ll also be trying out our new Watkins Seafood seasoning grinder along the way!

Have a fun Natures’ Heritage week out there while we’re gone!  Watch for new recipes next week!

A Wonderful Weekend

I and our Natures’ Heritage staff spent last weekend at a festival supporting the reintroduction on an endangered plant species in our local mountains.  It was a great experience with many people coming from all around the country to support this worthy cause.  Many stopped by our Watkins table and relayed many, many stories of the “Watkins” man coming to visit their homes, ranches and farms in earlier times to us.  It was very evident that the “Watkins” man/men had visited all over the country as well, from Maine to California, Pennsylvania to Arizona and all places in between, both urban and rural.

Upon seeing our Watkins banner, people immediately would smile, often say “Watkins”, and be seemingly transported back in time to some positive memories.  Many shared stories with each other right in front of us and our exhibit area about ”their” Watkins man and how these salesmen always carried vanilla, cinnamon and pepper, petro-carbo “cow” salve and the wonderful array of Watkins products, along oftentimes with items for children like sparklers or candy pops, etc to share while mom and dad, aunts and uncles looked over the products.

Several of the people visiting the festival had children and grandchildren in tow and we witnessed a great inter-generational experience as they shared their stories.  Upon hearing about the great properties of the Watkins heritage medicinals expressed by their parents and grandparents many of the younger ones wanted to know more about Watkins and if  the Watkins products were still available while also inquiring about the many new natural products available to try out and share.

Many people visiting the festival thought Watkins had disappeared from the scene like so many other companies over the decades and were very pleasantly surprised to find Watkins products and independent Watkins associates still there, the company now approaching 144 years old.  Catalogs flew off our table as did most of the Watkins products we had brought to the festival, and we completely ran out of samples.  We took additional orders and we’ve been working the last 2 days on orders, replenishing products and catching up on new mailing list entries for our monthly newsletter.

It made us all very proud and happy to be associated with this great American company and its long standing heritage which now spans three centuries.  Staff and I are still talking about this great experience and all those smiles on the peoples’ faces…:)

A Great Event

This last weekend I attended a very special event—The Friends of the Steve McQueen Car Show and Charity event in Chino, California.  It was held at a 200 acre site, the Boys Republic, which is the site of where Steve McQueen lived in 1946 as more or less a ward of the state.  Throughout his theatrical career he returned many times to this site per his son chad McQueen.  And as we all know Steve McQueen had an absolute thirst for speed, cars and motorcycles, and the occasional Stearman bi-plane.

Many of the cars and replicated sets of the movies Steve McQueen starred in, dotted the campus.  There were over 25 Bullitt cars alone, along with Rolls Royces and race cars similar to those in the infamous LeMans movie and the Thomas Crowne Affair.  What a delight.  Motorcycles rounded out the grounds along with several bands and a picnic lunch, with all proceeds going to the boys housed at this remarkable facility, originated from 1907 and apparently still going strong.  There were several hundred people at the event and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely.  So many memories!

I forgot the sunscreen and brought home a sunburn, a small price to pay for such an afternoon, and relieved the pain with Watkins After Sun gel, an aloe based product that works great for when you’ve been exposed to too much sun!

Have a great week out there and be sure and enjoy National Dairy Month with an ice cream cone of two along the way-

A Great Way to end National Small Business Week

Hi Everyone!

Natures’ Heritage staff participated in a 3 day Country Festival event over the weekend in a small rural town introducing and reintroducing the Watkins product line to small town Americana.  What a great way to celebrate National Small Business Week.  So many people came up to us and related wonderful stories and memories of the “Watkins” man who used to come out to their homes, farms and ranches.  Everyone had their favorite story to tell about Watkins vanilla, cinnamon or pepper it seemed.  What a great legacy we at Natures’ Heritage have to build and carry on as Independent Watkins representatives.

Some thought Watkins was no longer around and were happy to see us and Watkins alive and thriving.  Catalogs and samples flew off our table and it was just great to talk to so many people about Watkins and the “Naturals” gourmet spice, extract, personal and home care products.

By all accounts the economy is alive and well for entrepreneurship with Watkins and other small business endeavors.  One of the vendors near us has a small home based enterprise–spiced cookies, not too unusual you think, until you realize they are for HORSES!  Cinnamon and ginger cookies for your favorite 4 footed equine.  I thought of the winner of the Preakness, Shackelford, and Animal Kingdom, of Kentucky Derby fame and if cookies such as these might have given them an edge.

Here’s to another great week for entrpreneurs everywhere–we’re off to soak our feet in Watkins Peppermint Foot Care and then lavender scented Bath Soak!
