What do roadsters, dragsters and “rat” rods have in common?

The 62nd Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, Ca!  Literally hundred of cars of all sorts and genres, many with alot of flames.  And something called “rat” rods…the photo above is the 2010 winner of the title “Most Beautiful Roadster in America” and indeed it was a beauty.  What a collection of cars, paint, chrome and car aficionados all in one place.  This was a first time experience and an experience it was.  Initial thoughts were it was going to be like a car show, where you get a look at next year’s models.  This was incorrect thinking as we were soon to discover.  “Big Daddy” Roth, legendary custom car designer and creator of the RatFink character, and other widely known designers, have left quite a legacy if  all the custom cars and trucks we saw are any indication, many with names like “Midnight Pearl” ,”Golden Nugget”, “Dragon”, and “Polynesian Pineapple”.   The old woodies, many intact and many modified, were definitely old favorites, especially with surfboards attached for sun in the surf, ala 1950s style.

The dragsters were incredible, with one fired up for the crowd.  Nosiyyyyyyyy!  How can anyone really strap themselves into these things and fly down a 1/4 mile of track at over 180 mph!!   Sheer nerves of steel with flames as high as 6 ft. all around.    I’d want a parachute to slow down too!

As we were walking around taking in all the sights (and sounds) we could not help but think this was a great venue for kids and teens as well as adults.  There is so much artwork on display in and on the cars and trucks…motorcycles, too, even a boat, that it would be hard not to imagine a career field in some part of this industry, from art and design to engineering.   These creations are truly works of art and design resurrected from the backyards and auto parts junkyards transformed into these lasting legacies through hundreds of hours of restoration work.

It was a great walk down memory lane and we made a list during the event of  custom art and automotive engineering books to order for the public libraries…everybody should have the experience, in realtime or booktime, of this amazing profession and hobby…:)

A Fun Weekend

Saturday I helped judge a 4-H Science Fair.  4-H has been a part of the National fabric of the US for over 100 years and has a strong heritage based in nature, livestock and agriculture.  They also have a 5 year goal of 1 million scientists in 5 years, working with youth in their SET program.   SET stands for Science, Engineering and Technology.  The program has been well received throughout the states and science fairs and projects such as I judged are all part of the ways to get and keep kids involved with science and technology.  The kids were really into it and the projects and their projects were pretty detailed.  It is so important to encourage young people in the pursuit of science and technology.  These young scientists and researchers really are our future, those who will be creating new and alternative type technologies to enhance our lives, from nanobots to repair diseased or failing organs to organically grown food supplies, extracts, herbals and pharmaceuticals.   Support to them and their projects is vitally important to keep them focused on  these fields for careers.  If you see a  young person engaged in science or interested in technology please encourage them.  And if you want to increase the books available to these young people at any public library just stop by and inquire how you can help!

Watkins wins prestigious Natural Products Association Certification!!

A few days ago we were talking about the need for an entrpreneur to be connected to quality products.  Watkins products are an example of this, winning national and international awards for over 80 years.  Now, five more of Watkins Home Care Products were awarded NPA Certification by the prestigious Natural Products Association (NPA)! They are Lavender All Purpose Cleaner Lemon,  All Purpose Cleaner Orange Citrus,  All Purpose Cleaner Citrus Tub and Tile Cleaner,  Aloe & Green Tea Window Cleaner.  This is a great accomplishment for a company— Watkins is only the second home care product line to be certified by this organization. Future production of these products will begin carrying the NPA Home Care Seal.

When thinking about a company to align yourself with, look for these types of certifications and awards for the products or services you are interested in working with.  It will go along way towards the success of your home based or entrepeneurial ventures.

Have a great day out there and here’s to your entrepreneur seeking adventures!

January US National Holidays

Each year starts right off with a holiday—New Years’!  This day celebrates the beginning of the Gregorian and Julian calendars each year and is actually celebrated extensively around the world, not just the United States, and maybe the closest thing we may have to a global holiday.

The other National Holiday celebrated in January is Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.   Although his birthday falls on January 15th, the holiday is officially celebrated on the third Monday in January.  President Ronald Reagan signed the bill creating a Federal holiday to honor the slain civil rights leader in 1983 and it was first observed in 1986, 25 years ago.

Reverend King was the youngest person in history to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.  Commemorative stamps have been created over the years for Reverend King and he is regarded as having the most postal stamps created in his memory for a Black American.  According to postal statistics over 166,435,000 King stamps have been issued worldwide.

Thinking about being an Entrepreneur—Great!!

For a lot of us starting our own business, large or small is only  a dream—something too costly  and too risky to tackle.  Yet the desire remains—innate in many of us–to be our own boss, have our own hours, and determine our own success.  For others, due to layoffs, or technological changes, entrepreneurship is the only option remaining in these precarious economic times.  There is no better time than the present for the following reasons—

The Job Situation

Small business and entrepreneurship is where the economy is at.  Big business is not going to bring large numbers of jobs back so you need to prepare for this eventuality.  Jobs in the 21st century will come from small business and entrepreneurship, not government or big business.  This severe economic downturn is going to recover primarily on the efforts of small business and entrepreneurs.  Studies show that most small business enterprises are 5 years old or less and account for over 70% of the new growth.

Starting and establishing your own business can secure your future, even in recessionary times.  Did you know that more companies that we know and products we use today, were founded DURING the Great Depression of the 1930s than either before or after the Great Depression? That’s right!

Entrepreneurship means you are not dependent on anyone else.  You can’t be let go. You determine your own salary, hours, employees, etc.  The amount of time and effort you put into the business builds the foundation for your future.  If that seems a little fearful, partnering with an established firm as an Independent Contractor can bridge much of the uncertainty when just starting out on your own as an entrepreneur, as you will be able to learn from leaders and mentors about marketing and business principles.

Product, competition, and market territories

These three things are key to your success.  The product or service must be of high quality and the longer it has been around the better.  Products come and go quickly in today’s environment, stability goes a long way.  Also, if a product has saturated the market it will be difficult to differentiate your presence in the marketplace from everybody else.  Branding will be important to rise above your competition.

Let’s ise the Summit Group and Watkins as tailorrmade examples for you in this regards.  Watkins has been around for over 143 years and is not going anywhere.  Starting with one quality product, liniment, Watkins has evolved to over 350 products winning a number of prestigious awards along the way.  It also has continuously evolved with the times, ever conscious of green and natural trends and incorporated them into their quality products.

As for marketplace, saturation and competition, territories are wide open for Independent Contractors, with statistics showing one Independent Watkins Associate for every 250 families in the United States and Canada.  That’s like one green pea in the middle of North America!   Perfect for building your brand and business opportunity with the Summit Group extensive training site and experienced leaders and mentors to help you every step of the way.

Take the Next Step–Get Started!

Start our investigating your dreams in the New Year and find out just how satisfying entrepreneurship can be.  Resources are everywhere and reasonable.  Access to infomation and tools abundant.  Great people are available to recruit, quality products abound, and territories expand everyday.  If you’re seriously thinking about becoming an entrpreneur take the next step–now is the time!

Tasty Chicken Flatbread

Natures’ Heritage staff has been experimenting with flatbreads and pitas lately.  Here is one of our favorite recipes to date to come from this fun activity.  Enjoy!

4 Flatbreads

4 Boneless chicken breasts

4 Tomatoes, peeled and sliced

2 Ounces feta cheese, crumbled

2 Tablespoons lemon juice

1/2 Cup olive oil

Salt and Watkins Pepper to taste

Lettuce of choice, Kalamata or black olives

Grill chicken and cut into slices.  Mix tomatoes, cheese, lemon juice and olive oil.  Season with salt and Watkins pepper.  Fold in the chicken and place on the flatbread.  Add the lettuce and tomato mix mixing in olives.  Fold the flatbread in two and serve.

Yogurt sauce can also be added to the top of the flatbread mixture for an additional treat.  A good yogurt recipe is –

2 Cups Yogurt

1 Clove Garlic, minced

3 Walnuts, chopped

1 Teaspoon olive oil

Salt and Watkins pepper

Place the 2 cups of yogurt in a bowl and mash the garlic, walnuts and olive oil together.  Mix in the yogurt and season with salt and Watkins pepper.
