Along with apple pies and fall leave raking, I remember the Watkins man best in his fall visits to my grandparents farmhouse.  Although he would come monthly throughout the year, the fall season seemed to be the most memorable.  That is when he would really put his products on display, wonderful smells of Cinnamon and Vanilla filling the kitchen from his case.  His was an easy sell as we always looked forward to his visits.  We always overstocked and he always talked us into trying something new.  He resembled a friendly uncle who came to visit with the latest news.  He always seemed to have a few extra moments to discuss the weather, ask how the livestock were and pet the dog before he left for his next stop.  In these busy times, when everyone seems to be running to and from all the time for work and errands, those slower times seem far away and long ago now, but remain aged to a golden hue.
