Hurricane Sandy

After seeing the devasting effects of Hurricane Sandy on the Eastern Seaborad last week two great American relief organizations come to mind to help with recovery efforts for our fellow Americans in need—the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army–

Additional information can be found at these websites–

https://www.redcross.org

https://donate.salvationarmyusa.org/

And if you’re curious, as we were at Natures’ Heritage, as to which of these two great American relief organizations, The Red Cross or the Salvation Army started first, a little research shows that the Salvation Army started in 1852, followed by the Red Cross in 1881.

And if you’re curious as to when the Watkins company started, it was right after the Civil War in 1868…144 years ago…

Of Nicks and Cuts

While replacing a cabinet door the other day the workman managed to nick himself and create a small cut on his hand.  without thinking I reached for the Watkins Petro-Carbo salve–the one in the red can.   A few days later the workman returned and told me he had never had a cut or nick heal so fast…quite an  impressive testamony for the famous little red can that has graced alot of households over the decades.  If you’ve never tried the product, it is still one of  Watkins top products after being around for several decades in homes, farms and ranches.  Check it out, we think you’ll be glad you did.  Now back to that cabinet door…

Chia Seeds

Everywhere I go lately Chia seeds seem to be a topic of discussion.  Yes, the same Chia seeds that are used in Chia Pet projects!  So many discussions from Dr. Oz to the local health food store, so I decided to check them out.

Chia seeds have been around for over 5000 years and were a wonder food for the ancient Aztecs and Mayans.  Lately the beneficial attributes of these little seeds have come back to light, especially for folks looking for gluten-free alternatives in foods and recipes and others trying to combat the infamous “belly fat” epidemic.  They come in a black or white variety, with the white variety used for baking.  Much like Watkins clear vanilla for wedding cakes and other decorative bakes.

I found out a little about these marvelous little seeds.  They have
-  more protein than kidney beans
- more antioxidant strength than blueberries
- more iron than spinach
- more calcium than milk
- more vitamin C than oranges
- more omega-3 than salmon
- more fiber than rice
- more magnesium than broccoli

You might want to give them a try in your salads, cereals, recipes and smoothies this summer—let us know how that works out, and happy chia-ing!

Have a great Natures’ Heritage Week out there!

21st Century Watkins Man

At Market Night this week we encountered many stories of the Watkins Man visiting homes, ranches and farms.  Many told, always with a smile and fond memories, stories of “thier” Watkins Man.  We often wonder what qualities were either instilled or employed by Watkins in recruiting these select representatives as there is never a negative comment about them—how many could we say that of sales reps or distributors these days?

Wonderful stories of vanilla, cinnamon and pepper, along with lots of recipes using these products, salves and lotions and potions of the red and green can varieties, the stories were numerous.  Some again thought the company had gone the way of Ipana toothpaste or other favorites of a bygone era and were so happy to see their old favorites alive and well in the market nights of America.

If you have a favorite “Watkins Man” story you’d like to share, so far in this century or last, please let us know–and have a great Natures’ Heritage week out there!
